To all of my fellow first years, its finally here, fall Start-Up. Since I got my acceptance letter in the mail, starting university has been the only thing on my mind. Some of you might not be as excited for orientation as I am, but here are 3 reasons why you should look forward to it!
1. You will meet people!
Walking into a new school with many faces that you have never seen before can be a bit overwhelming and scary, but just remember that everyone is in the same position as you! Orientation is about stepping out of your comfort-zone, introducing yourself to people, and getting to know others with the same interests as you. Who knows, that person you talk to during orientation may turn out to be a best friend for life. Be open-minded and make the most of this opportunity to meet people. This is the very beginning of your university experience! Make it a good one!
2. Think Tank
Think Tank is what interested me in orientation the most. Each student is given the opportunity to watch a documentary or read a short story, they then will be split into groups at Fall Start-Up and must talk about their piece and share their thoughts with
others in the group. This gives students the chance to participate in a university-style seminar before school even begins! Many of us coming out of high school have never participated in anything of this nature before, so working out the kinks in a practice run like Think Tank is a great opportunity!
3. Writing Lab
Much like Think Tank, the writing lab gives first year students a glimpse into university writing. Students are given a topic and are told to write an essay about it. These essays are then read and given back to the student with a multitude of feedback that will give the student steps to improve their writing skills. This is something to look forward to, as the transition from high school to university is quite substantial when it comes to writing. So, instead of the writing lab being a chore… think of it as a step closer to that A+ on every essay from here on out!
Fall Start-Up for many people is something they look forward to all summer (like me), but for others it is an awkward 2 days spent with people they don’t know, and doing things they don’t want to do. I do hope that me sharing how I feel about the main aspects of Fall Start-Up as a first year student as well, aids you in wanting to open up and make the best of this experience! It is meant to be fun and engaging, but that will only happen if you step out of your comfort-zone and embrace it. In case my 3 reasons haven’t convinced you to come out, let me mention a couple other great reasons to participate: free food and a concert!
So I’ll see you there?
