Because Family Day falls on the 3rd Monday of February, some people might see that and think of it as one less day of going to class, a free day off of work, or day to sleep in, but family should be the priority on this day. Whether you live with your family or your family is half way across the world, Family Day is a day made so that you can be free of all your daily tasks to be able to spend it with the ones you love. At TrentU Durham we have international students who are currently spending time away from their family. To those students this day absolutely still applies to you. There are other ways of communicating to your family instead of just being face-to-face with them, like Skype and Facetime or even a simple phone call. If your family is going to be more than a few hours away then maybe send them a care package. You could include things like a Trent University t-shirt for your siblings and a coffee mug for your guardian, an updated picture of you and maybe a hand written letter to show them you are thinking of them. It is the thought that counts and people usually love the small little actions that are done for them.
For those of you who live at home, or who are able to see your family,, there are ways of showing your family love and how much you appreciate them. If you are able to, try to go out and do something with your family. Try visiting Ripley’s Aquarium (open regular hours) down town Toronto or the Science Centre (open 10am-5pm) if you’re looking to get out of Durham for a bit. But if staying local is best for you could go skating at a local community centre, go see a new movie, head out for dinner or just take a drive around with your family and have great conversation.
The list of things that you can do is endless, it all depends on what you and your family enjoy doing and what your budget and schedules are like. It isn’t about what you are doing with them, it’s about being with them. Although your family might have busy schedules day to day, this is one day where the day is meant to be spent with the ones you love.
This day is not glamorized like Christmas or Easter, but it should be because family is the most important thing in our busy lives and sometimes we don’t always remember to tell the people around us how much we love them and how thankful we are for the things that they do each day for us. You don’t need to go overboard with finding something to give them or finding something to do with your family, just do something that will show your appreciation.
Happy Family Day!
