The Winter term is complete at TrentU Durham, and Spring courses have started! But with graduation and summer fast approaching, I thought I’d lighten the mood and recommend some movies to watch to help us all forget about the rain and get into the “summer is here” spirit!
- Grease (1978)
I’m a sucker for a musical, and I grew up watching Grease. John Travolta, Olive Newton-John; Sandy, Danny, and those summer nights… Man, it is the cheesy, innuendo-filled, pun and games movies I love—and with that 50’s era aesthetic, and those dance moves, it’s just the movie to get me into the summer groove. There is nothing quite like watching the teenage struggle onscreen to remind myself that I am an adult, with a degree, and I don’t have classes right now!
- High School Musical 2 (2007)
It’s another musical, with high school students—I’m sensing a theme. But honestly, the first High School Musical is a masterpiece, and the second is a guilty pleasure. There is nothing that screams summer quite like working at a golf course (I never did it, but I know a lot of people who have) and frolicking in someone else’s swimming pool. Singing, dancing, golfing—and that wonderful baseball number—make High School Musical 2 a light-hearted summer flick.
- Monte Carlo (2011)
The classic case of mistaken identity turns a twenty-something American girl into a pampered heiress—while it lasts. There are all the typical mistaken identity tropes, and the drama that goes with them, wrapped up in beautiful cityscapes. I love this movie because it’s so unbelievable! You know it could never happen, but it’s still something to dream about. And watching the girls travel from France to Monte Carlo in the summer just makes me feel like beach weather is just around the corner!
- The Lizzie McGuire Movie (2003)
Lizzie McGuire is mistaken for an Italian pop star while on a graduation trip to Italy—what could possibly go wrong? This is one of my number-one feel good movies, and it never fails to make me smile. Watching the shenanigans, listening to the music, seeing Italy, and tracking the Lizzie/Gordo dynamics make this movie my number one in terms of destressing and recharging. It’s the perfect way to decompress after a year of school and a great set up for summer. This is what dreams are made of!
- New York Minute (2004)
When twin sisters leave their house for the day, Jane prepares for a presentation that will get her into college, while Roxy plans to ditch class to pass her demo to Simple Plan; it quickly becomes a mess. This movie has the Olsen twins (and Jared Padalecki) and enough tropes to fill a compendium. You’ve got twins, gangsters, deadlines, truant officers, and Simple Plan—it’s a feel-good movie, and a another one where you can sit back and remember you aren’t in high school any more. It’s a nice feeling.
So there’s my list of some movies that I think can help kick-start summer! While it is far from complete (it doesn’t even have Moana on it, for shame) it is something for you to curl up and watch as the rain keeps coming and summer gets closer. Comment with any movies that get you into the swing of summer, and don’t forget your sunscreen!
