Victoria Day

Written by: Billie Clark

For a lot of people, Victoria Day and the May “Two-Four” weekend marks the start of summer. This is the weekend that most people open their cottage, if they haven’t yet.

I have worked at a fast food restraint right on the highway on the way to cottage country, so I know how busy this weekend can be. It gets pretty crazy!

So, if you are travelling today, be careful—there will be a lot of people on the road.

If you decided to spend the day at home, enjoying your STAT holiday, here are some activities you can do with your family.

  • Play a Board Game

Board games are a bit of a cliché when it comes to family time, but that’s because they really enable bonding. Trivial Pursuit can show off everyone’s areas of expertise—my mom is really good with celebrity gossip from the 1950s to the 1980s, whereas I’m better with the literature and film stuff. Clue can be really funny, especially if you’re the types who get into characters for it. The Game of Life can help you laugh off any remaining existential angst… Jenga is just a lot of fun. Finding some time to play and laugh together can make your day off a real celebration!

  • Watch a Movie or TV Show

Spending some time as a family in front of the television might not seem like a novel idea—in fact, in most households, I’d say it’s fairly commonplace. But spending a couple hours together watching a movie or TV show that you have picked out specifically to spend some time watching has a bit of a different feel. You’ve planned it—it has become an event. Pick out a movie that you haven’t seen yet but all want to, or grab one of the childhood favourites that even your parents enjoy. Stream a show that everyone has been meaning to watch, but hasn’t had the opportunity to catch yet. Spend the day cuddled on the couch, vegging out with the fam!

  • Play Outside

Going out and enjoying the weekend and the weather is a great way to spend some family time together. Go for a short hike, a bike ride, or just spend some time outside as a family. Yesterday might have been rainy, but today might be nice, and you should enjoy some summer when you can!

Enjoy your day off, and stay safe!
